Live Cell Imaging 2009

Monash University
Melbourne, Victoria

Live Cell Imaging workshop 2008 - Ian Harper presenting

Sunday 29 November - Friday 4 December 2009

LCI09 Registrations are now closed as we have reached capacity.  Please contact Anna Jenkins if you wish to be placed on a wait list in the event of any cancellations.

The 6-day course will include topics such as Widefield and Confocal principles and hardware, Digital imaging and image analysis, Optimising imaging modalities, Fluorescence techniques, eg FRET, FLIM, FRAP, Multiphoton microscopy, and Ratio (eg.Ion) Imaging over twelve hours of lectures and twenty-two hours of set practicals (proposed program). We will provide a range of fluorescent cell markers and novel fluorescent protein tags that will be used during the course including Invitrogen’s Cellular and Organelle Lights, and New England Biolab’s SNAP and CLIP tags.

To ensure all aspects of imaging are covered we will be holding evening image processing labs using the data generated by the afternoon practicals. We recommend that students get accommodation locally to allow and ensure full participation in these evening sessions.

Proposed program

We would also like to bring your attention to the FABLS Light in Life Sciences conference being held in Melbourne the week preceding the MMI Live Cell Course (24 -27 Nov). LCI’09 is an associated workshop of the Light in Life Sciences conference, and will include a joint bio-imaging session with OzViz, a workshop for visualisation of 3D structure.

We will provide a wide range of standard cell lines during the course (CHO-K1, COS, RAW, etc), but if you would like to bring your own cell line to try with the instruments and fluorophores available at the course please contact MMI's Laboratory Manager, Anna.Jenkins@med.monash.edu.au, organise import to the facility as soon as possible.

To ensure all aspects of imaging are covered we will be holding evening image processing labs using the data generated by the afternoon practicals. We recommend that students get accommodation locally to allow and ensure full participation in these evening sessions.

Groups will be assigned a mentor to assist them with the science of live cell microscopy and representatives of the microscope companies will be assisting with operation of systems and specific questions regarding instrumentation. Groups are expected to present their results on Friday afternoon.
